Steve Jobs presentation at Insanely Great (1980) -- build a tool to amplify the human mind.
If the computer is a bicycle for the mind, then learning programming must be similar to learning to ride a bicycle. Once we get past the "training wheels" stage, there will be many different places it will bring us. Yes, you will fall down in the process of learning. Yes, the training wheels must come off initially. But, you will get it eventually and you will get from learning to push the return key to actually being able to write a program.
